Research

-In 100 years, all of the world's rain forests will be gone if we continue cutting down trees at the same pace we are now.
-Trees absorb greenhouse gases which are what causes global warming.
-The biggest cause of deforestation is agriculture because farmers cut down trees for more room to plant crops and for livestock.
-The best way to solve deforestation is to stop clear cutting forests.
-Financial realities make it impossible to stop cutting down trees.
-If a forest has been cut down, that region may experience a drought because when the trees are cut down, there is nothing to shade the soil from the sun's heat.

Who We Are

An inquiry in to the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social, and spiritual health; human relations including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

My Exhibition Topic

My exhibition topic is conserving the environment. I want to do this for exhibition because our ancestors  didn't take care of the Earth well enough and it's our job to clean it up so future generations can enjoy it. Our exhibition topic has to do with the theme because it goes into rights and responsibilities because it's our responsibility to take care of the Earth. It also has to do with beliefs and values because the Earth is our home, so we value it. My group wants to volunteer at Trees for Houston to help them water the trees they planted in the spring. we are also going to have an Earth Day celebration at Mark Twain to raise awareness about deforestation. We hope that mark twain will continue to have the Earth Day celebration every year on Earth Day.

My Special Item

After 3 years of hard work, practicing, rehearsing, brainstorming new ideas, and of course, eating snacks, my Odyssey of the Mind team finally got to go to state competition.
Last year I had been so sure that our team was going to go to state, but we forgot a piece to our Rube Goldberg machine. This year I was determined to make it to state.
So all year I worked with my team to create the perfect performance. When we got to the regionals competition, we performed our skit, did our spontaneous, and ate lunch. Later that night, Rebecca and I went to the awards ceremony. We sat in our seats, apprehensive to know if we were going to state. Finally, the judges began to recite the teams going to state that did the Odyssey Angels problem. When the judges called our team name, we just sat there for a second, shocked that we were going to state. Then we broke out of our trance and went up onto the stage. One of the judges slipped the medal around my neck. I smiled as my dad took a picture of us in front of the picture of the odyssey Omer saying "Going to State." When we got back to our seats, I couldn't stop smiling.

A Time I Felt Invincible

A time I felt invincible was when I was at swim practice, I was staying late after practice, waiting for my dad to pick me up. While I was waiting, I heard my swim coach shout from across the pool, "Hey Audrey! Come over here and bring your towel!" So I grabbed my towel and quickly walked to the other side of the pool. my swim coach pulled me aside and asked me, "Do you remember the flip turn drill we did last week?" I nodded my head. "Well," he said. "These kids just don't understand it, could you please hop in the pool and demonstrate how to do it?" I took off my sweat shirt and sweat pants and hopped into the pool. I swam a few strokes then stopped and did a flip turn. I did this a couple of times, then turned around and swam back. As I swam I looked at the younger kid's faces and saw them watch me with admiration. "Thanks." My coach said as I climbed out of the pool. "You really helped them understand how to do it." I happily skipped back to where my kick board, sweat pants and sweat shirt were. When I looked back over my shoulder, I could see all the younger kids swimming the flip turn drill I had just showed them moments ago. I beamed as I dried off and put back on my sweat shirt and sweat pants and went back to waiting for my dad to pick me up, smiling the whole time.

This I Believe Statement

I believe in making mistakes and learning from them. This is because I make ALOT of mistakes. But if I embarrass myself, I think to myself, "Don't worry about it, I'll probably never see any of these people again in my life." or if I embarrass myself in front of my friends I think, "Calm down, they're your friends, they won't care if you do one little thing embarrassing! Okay maybe two little embarrassing things."
